Radioactive: Chapter Eighteen

Radioactive
Chapter Eighteen
~Bring it Together~

Ing ran down an alley with a mutant close on his tail. He used his segmented arms to propel him forward just out of reach of the raging mutant. The mutant snakelike in nature and could keep up with the young android. Ing swung and jumped out of reach with a carefree attitude. He reached the end of the alley and stood there. Ing crouched down and covered his ears with his hands. The mutant crept closer, ready to deliver its final attack. It screamed its victory before its cry was cut short suddenly by a loud gunshot.
The creature fell into a heap on ground just behind Ing. Fang walked out of the shadows in the alley toward Ing with the gun in his hand. He barely looked down at the creature as he walked passed it and holstered his gun. Fang knelt down by Ing and picked him up.
“I’ve always hated how they scream,” Fang stated as he walked out with Ing.
“I just turn down the excessive noise so that it is more bearable,” Ing said with his arms wrapped around Fang.
Fang looked at him, “We humans can’t do that.”
“Oh,” Ing said, “That is unfortunate.”
Fang suddenly crouched down in the shadows of the alley. Ing kept still and quiet as he waited. Above them, five creatures jumped the gap between buildings to the other side. Fang and Ing were unnoticed. Ing was about to say something but Fang placed a hand over Ing’s mouth. Just a few moment later, another mutant jumped over the gap.
“Their organized,” Fang stated, “They even have a sweeper to check for any stragglers.” Fang looked back down at Ing, “Where are the others?”
Ing scanned the area, “The others are scattered in the area. The group of mutants are headed toward Riu and Duke are. We are only a few streets over from their current location.”
“Let’s go,” Fang stood up. He changed into his wolf form, “Hurry up.”
Ing jumped onto Fang’s back. Fang ran off down the alleyway. He took off through the streets following Ing instruction. The group had been broken apart as they tried to restore order to the chaos that was unraveling before them. In the mess of the scene the group of seven lost track of each other and were only just finding each other now. Fang seemed to fly above the ground. His speed was so fast that it didn’t seem like his paws were touching the ground at all. Ing held on to Fang tightly as to not lose his grip and fly off of Fang’s back.
Fang jumped up and climbed up a fire escape. He reached the roof and leaped from one building to the next. Fang slit to a stop to look over the edge of the building. Riu and Duke were down in the street below taking care of any enemies that charged at them.
Duke was brutal with his large broadsword. The ground quaked every time he smashed the blade into the ground. Large crevasses appeared suddenly causing the attacking mutants to fall into them. With a motion from Duke, the ground closed up again leaving only a small scar where the crevasse used to be. Riu spun around, the blades in her hair, cutting at any mutant that got to close. Electricity flowed through her hair as well, shooting out at nearby mutants and electrocuting those who were cut. She stabbed at mutants with the daggers in her hands including the ones she threw.
The six mutants that Fang and Ing had found lay dead around the deadly duo. Lightning from the sky and earth shakes from the ground kept their attackers at bay. A winged mutant flew in over the buildings and dived onto Duke and Riu. Ing jumped over Fang’s back and jumped onto the mutants back. The mutant fell to the ground because of the added weight. It crashed into a row of crowd of mutants clearing the area.
“Hey there, kid! Where’d you come in from?” Riu looked over her shoulder.
Ing stood up and dusted himself off, “Hey! I came from up there with Fang.”
Fang jumped down in his wolf form. He walked over to the others and looked around briefly, looking for any other mutants nearby. Duke looked propped his sword on his shoulder.
“Where do you think the others are?” Duke asked.
“Who cares,” Riu snapped, “We have enough to worry about right now than where the smug-apartment-breaker is.”
“We’re stronger together,” Fang stated. He looked over at Ing, “Who’s closest to our current location?”
Ing closed his eyes and scanned the area, “The closest one is Jekyll.” Ing pointed in the direction.
“The creepy doctor?” Riu made a face, “He creeps me out…”
“As long as you don’t pull a weapon on him, you should be fine,” Fang stalked off into the direction Ing pointed. He looked over his shoulder, “Let’s go!”
“Okie dokie!” Ing ran after Fang.
“Right behind you,” Duke said as he walked after them.
Riu groaned and followed the others, keeping an eye on their flank. Her complaints were just loud enough to get on the other’s nerves.

Jekyll stood over the bodies of about two dozen dead mutants. He sighed out of boredom and tugged on the rim of his hat. Fighting these creatures was getting more and more predictable making fighting them rather boring. They had no strategy and not enough brawn. Over all they just went down to easily. Jekyll fitted on his gloves. He stopped momentary. He looked over his shoulder as if he sensed something. Thinking it was nothing; he turned back around and started walking down one of the alley ways.
He turned around suddenly and threw a surgical scalpel. It struck something unseen to the eye. It screamed and dropped its cloak with a scalpel in its throat. It fell to the ground, jerked, and died. Again, Jekyll sighed.
“That was a better effort,” Jekyll stated, “but still not good enough.”
He heard sounds of fighting near his location and decided to check it out. Jekyll walked toward the noise down the alley. He came out into a small street and ran into Kiri. She ran past him as she fired a handgun at some mutants that chased after her. Jekyll assisted and took down three of the mutants that chased her. Kiri shot down two with accuracy rivaling only Jekyll’s.
Kiri looked over at her help, “Jekyll, it’s good to someone.”
“You’re all alone?” Jekyll asked, “Did Kaiba ditch you?”
“We got separated when one of the mutants attacked,” Kiri explained, “I am closing in on his position now.”
“I guess I have nothing better to do,” Jekyll shrugged, “Saving Kaiba will at least allow me bragging points.”
Kiri rolled her eyes, “Let’s go!”
“Lead the way,” Jekyll smiled.
They ran down the street and turned around a corner. The street was empty but Kiri slowed down. Kiri stopped and looked around curiously.
“That makes no sense,” she said.
“What did he just disappear?” Jekyll asked.
“My scans read that he is moving faster that he can even run which isn’t possible,” Kiri reported.
Jekyll looked up, “Unless he’s had a little help.”
Kiri turned toward Jekyll, “But why would—”
Kaiba crashed into the ground and an angle as if he had been thrown. He came to a rest, sliding on his back. Kiri ran over to him but he shooed her away, getting to his feet on his own. He was more or less in one piece. A loud roar got their attention. An enormous mutant towered at the end of the street. It bellowed before charging down the street.
“It runs in a straight line!” Kaiba told the others, “Jump to one side!”
The three Fixers scattered as the mutant charged by. Jekyll threw three scalpels at the creatures back but the attack was useless. The sharp weapons didn’t have any effect.
Jekyll smiled, “This will be fun!”
“It hasn’t been so far!” Kaiba called back.
“That’s because you didn’t have me!” Jekyll charged forward.
Kiri ran alongside him, “He seems to have a hard exterior. Any projectiles will not have an effect. I suggest keeping it busy while I try to scan for a weakness.”
“Leave it to me,” Jekyll glanced over at her, “I’m sure Kaiba will help to when he’s finished licking his wounds.”
“I heard that!” Kaiba shouted.
Jekyll sighed, “You were meant to.”
Kiri fell back and Jekyll and Kaiba charged at the massive mutant. A long blade jetted out from Kaiba’s wrist as he tried to attack the mutant while its back was still turned. The creature turned suddenly knocking both men to one side. Kaiba flew into a wall while Jekyll that thrown through a glass shop window. Jekyll winced as a shard of glass cut him on his left side. Kaiba got to his feet just as the creature bellowed. Kiri took that time to jump onto its back and balance herself on its shoulders. She pulled a shot gun from a compartment in her back and fired it at the back of the creature’s head.
The mutant cried with more annoyance than pain, reached up with its massive arms, grabbed her and threw her into the ground like a rag doll. Kaiba looked behind him through the broken window. Jekyll was on his feet and pulled the glass shard out of his side. He held the bloodied glass shard in his hand playfully. Jekyll started laughing hysterically.
He stopped just as suddenly as he started. His hat was tossed aside. He looked at the creature with a cold hearted stare, “You made me bleed. I’ll make sure you live to regret that!”
The glass shards on the floor rose with a strange eerie red tint. The creature bellowed in response as it prepared to charge again. Jekyll smiled and raised a single hand. With a cold crazed stare snapped his finger. The glass shards shot forward, striking the mutant at full force. The mutants charge was stopped as it tried to cover its face from the glass. The glass didn’t stop after one pass. They circled the mutant cutting it repeatedly.
Kaiba ran forward. He cut at the creatures legs, weakening it so that it was forced to its knees. Kaiba quickly changed direction and cut in an upward slash along the creature’s chest throwing the creature to one side. The mutant maintained its balance by putting its weight on one arm. Kaiba jumped onto its back and grabbed the creatures head. The blade emerged from his other wrist and he brought down his arm and slit the creature’s throat. The creature bucked and fell to the ground lifeless.
He got off the creatures back and walked over to Kiri, “Kiri are you okay?”
“Checking for any substantial damage,” Kiri paused and didn’t move as she checked her systems, “Severe damage to right side. Unable to access weapon compartment in right arm. Still have motion capabilities. No other substantial damage is noted.” She raised her left arm for assistance.
Kaiba helped her to her feet, “Can you still be of assistance?”
“We androids are ambidextrous,” Kiri explained, “We may have a preference but using out unfavored arm has no effect on our performance.”
“Good,” Kaiba nodded. He turned around, “Jekyll, are you back?”
Jekyll picked up his hat, “I’ve always been here. If you mean mentally, well, I’m here enough to know not to gut you.” He looked at Kaiba, “I’d be careful though. You never know when I might slip up.”
“Looks like we’ve missed the fun!” Riu complained, her hands were on her hips in disappointment.
Fang shook his head, “You were the one dragging your feet complaining about how we had to find the others.”
Ing jumped off of Fang’s back and ran over to Kiri. He looked at her damaged arm and started to do some minor repairs and alterations; just enough to improve its damaged appearance and maybe help her regain the use of her arm.
“What now?” Duke asked.
Kaiba looked down the street. Apparently they had an audience. A few mutants were watching their titan fall. They were hoping to slip back into the sewers without being noticed.
“I say we go hunt this doctor,” Kaiba stated, “I’m getting tired of fighting his minions.”
“About freaking time!” Fang muttered.
“Oh, heck no!” Riu protested, “Do you know how expensive these kicks are!? There is no way you will have me paradin’ around in no sewer!”
“Fine stay here then,” Kaiba shrugged, “I could care less. Come on, everyone. Let’s get this over with.”

The Turn: Chapter Thirty-Seven

The Turn
Chapter Thirty-Seven
~So it Begins~
One Year Before The Turn

Scar sat in the center of the helm. Others sat around looking at screens and monitoring progress while three others sat ahead and focused on flying the massive ship. He smiled as he saw the tall towering building. Finally things were getting into place. The giant warship, the Metamor, was the first of its kind and had the ability to flatten the little island before people knew it existed.
A door open and the driver walked in and stood on Scar’s right side. He looked out the panoramic windows ahead at the Island. The Island was in sight. It was indeed a beautiful land made up of plains, forests, deserts, mountains and defiantly urban life. Even looking at the surrounding ocean he could tell that they had some beautiful coral reefs.
The driver looked down at Scar, “It’s a shame really. It’s a beautiful island.”
Scar looked up at him, “But as you say, they are a force to be reckoned with and too dangerous to be left alone.”
“That is what I said, wasn’t it,” the driver nodded.
Scar looked back at the view, “I say we use the Silver Void and be done with it.”
“Why rush things?” the driver stated. “I say we toy with them a little.”
“What do you propose?” Scar asked.

IOIOIOIOI

“Sir, the main cannon is showing an energy spike!” one of the computer workers below shouted out.
“What is its target?” Sirius called.
Leena provided the answer, “Downtown, narrowing down to specific location.”
“Tell the police to get everyone out of there!” Sirius commanded.
“Aye, sir!” the entire room shouted.

Zara ran down the empty streets toward the east docks. Her team ran behind her, Chaud on her left. Fang ran toe to toe beside her on her right while Shadow ran a little slower on Fang’s right. Fang’s team rallied around him. Zara looked over at Fang several times on their trek. She wondered how in the world he and his team managed to take down Zero. To be considerate, she slowed her running pace so that he could keep up. On the other hand, Fang glanced at her as well wondering why the Tower would hire such inexperienced teens. He was running slower so the young bloods wouldn’t get left behind in the dust.
It didn’t matter now; they both had the same goal: stop Scar and drag his butt prison where he could stare at white walls all day.
They ran over the next ridge and saw exactly what they were up against. Both Zara and Fang stopped in their tracks and looked at the sight before them. An enormous airship sailed just off the coast. A large cannon propped onto the top of the ship turned slightly. There was a high-pitched whine that followed.
Zara muttered, “Shoot!”
“Let’s move!” Fang called and dashed forward.
The cannon fired and shot forward a bright light. It was quickly followed by an explosion. Vicky was blown to one side as a building burst in flame. Penelope tripped on a rock and fell on her face, breaking her glasses. Though they weren’t attacked directly, the impact and flames were felt for several blocks.
“What the—” Deontay exclaimed.
“Well that’s going to be a bit of an issue,” Chaud dusted off his shirt.
Shadow nodded, “True. How do you propose we proceed?”
Chaud smiled, “I need to make a call first.”

“Where did that beam strike?” Sirius asked.
“The Appleberry Company building,” Leena stated. “The building and the surrounding businesses were reported evacuated five minutes ago. Casualties unknown but unlikely.”
Sirius sighed with relief. The phone suddenly rang on the table next to the computer. Sirius picked up the phone and answered it.
“Hello dad!” Chaud’s voice rang through the phone.
“Chaud!” Sirius exclaimed, “Where are you! Do you know how much trouble you’re in!?”
“Looks like there’s giant alien spaceship that nearly fired my head off with a beam of some sort,” Chaud stated.
“What? Where are you!?” Sirius questioned.
“I’m at the docks,” Chaud explained, “Just calling to say that Fang, Zara and I are going to save the day now. Do you have any ideas how to do that?”
Sirius sighed, “Well, we need to get rid of that cannon at all cost. It would be great if we could take down the whole thing as well.”
“What do we have with weapons?” Chaud asked.
Sirius smiled, “Whatever you have on you right now. We don’t have the time nor the manpower to get anything to you right now.”
Chaud considered the situation, “Sounds good.”
“Chaud, wait!” Sirius started.
Chaud paused, “Yeah, dad?”
Sirius sighed, “Be safe.”
“Will do,” Chaud stated. “Tell mom hi for me,” he hung up the phone.

“Well?” Hina had her hands on her hips, “What’s the plan?”
Chaud pointed at the flying fortress, “We need to take out that cannon.”
“Wow,” Naru rolled his eyes, “Any idea how we’re going to do that?”
“I might,” Zara said.
“If only we had plans of a’ what the flyin’ thing looks line on the inside,” Alister sighed.
“Aw, look at the cute little robotic doggie!” Arisa exclaimed.
All eyes turned to look at her. She crouched in front of a large robotic dog.  Arisa patted the dog on the head. Lumin stood close by and made sure that the dog didn’t try anything. Chaud looked slightly interested.
“Miwa?” Chaud questioned.
Miwa turned to him, his blue eyes looking at his friend. His tail waved excitedly, “Hey, what’s up!”
He stopped waving his tail as all eyes landed on him, “What?” Miwa looked around, “Why is everyone looking at me?”
“Are you equipped with a scanner?” Chaud asked with a smile on his face.
Miwa took a few steps back, “Maybe.”

“The airship has three levels. The engine is in the lowest level. If you are going to take that thing out of the sky, I’d start there,” Miwa walked along side Fang and Zara, “The best time to get in would be when the main cannon is taken out. I think that would be rather distracting. They do have two more but they aren’t as powerful as the main one. Personally, I think that this plan will be a good one. You two came up with this together?”
“No,” both Zara and Fang said at the same time.
Miwa looked over his shoulder, “So Chaud came up with it on the spot?”
“I think he talked it out with that guy with the black hair,” Zara said.
“Shadow,” Fang stated, “His name is Shadow.”
“Sorry, I wasn’t able to catch his name when he was shooting at me and my second,” Zara’s sarcasm leaked through.
“Okay!” Miwa butted in, “You know other than the whole ‘doom falling from the sky’ thing it is actually really nice today. I heard it’s supposed to be 85° today! 85°! Can you believe that?”
“Are the others in position?” Zara rolled her eyes.
“They should be,” Chaud stated as he walked up.
Raven walked up beside him, “Everything is in order Fang.”
Chaud shrugged, “That’s basically what I just said.”
“With a lot less certainty,” Raven muttered.
“At this rate,” Miwa shook his head, “Our rate of success is going to be 85%. So when does this whole shindig start ‘cause I kinda need to disappear. Don’t worry though! I’ll find a nice safe place to watch you guys from. Far away from here. Like waaaaay over there.”
“See ya, Miwa,” Chaud said.
“You might want to run,” Zara stated as she looked at her watch, “It’s about to begin.”
The cannon turned slightly and started its high pitched charging.

The Turn: Chapter Fourteen

The Turn
Chapter Fourteen
~And So It Begins~
Three Years before the Turn

Sirius walked into work nearly a week after the assessments. He walked into the glass building casually, his son Kaiba not too far behind. Lori, the front desk secretary, handed him his daily cup of coffee. She gave him a smile while he nodded his thanks in return. Kaiba was always more of a tea personality and was very specific with what type of tea so he would just get his own.
The interior of the Tower was glamorous to the first timer. For Sirius, it was just another busy day at work. He walked over to the elevator, greeting people as he passed them by. He made an effort to learn as many names as possible as to have a more personal relationship with his employees.
In the elevator, Sirius pulled a card from his pocket, scanned it in a scanner, and typed a pass key on a nearby screen. Only after that did the elevator move to the uppermost floor. When it opened, there was a single hallway. Two large desks lay in its own inlet on either side of the hallway. One belonged to Kaiba, the other to a woman.
She looked up at Sirius and Kaiba. Her hair was short and black. She had purple eyes that had the slight slant of Asian descent. She wore a sleeveless kimono top colored purple with black hems tied at the waist with a black cloth. Her black pants were form fitting and her heels were the same color purple as her shirt. Her face was emotionless as she waited for Sirius to say something.
“Hello, Kiri,” Sirius smiled.
She looked down at her computer and typed away at the key board, “Voice sample confirmed. Hello, Sirius.”
“Hello, Kiri,” Kaiba said as he settled into the desk across from Kiri.
Sirius looked back at Kaiba, “It still astounds me that you were able to create her. She looks so real for a robot.”
“Humanoid, father, she’s supposed to look human,” he said as he turned on his system.
“I am right here,” Kiri said, still typing away at the computer.
Sirius dipped his head in an apology, “Where are my manners? I’m sorry about that, Kiri.”
“Apology accepted,” Kiri nodded.
Sirius looked over at Kaiba, “You know, he’s practically a genius but he can’t get a girl friend.”
Kiri smiled at the comment. It looked like her cheeks had reddened a little.
Kaiba sighed, “I don’t have time for a girl friend.”
Sirius shook his head as he walked to his office at the end of the hallway, he swiped another card different from the first one and the electronic sliding door opened, “If I had said that when I was your age, I wouldn’t have meet your mother.”
The door closed before Sirius could hear his son’s response. The room was large with a small lounging room to one side next to his desk area. The whole room was the shape of half a circle. Widows lined the outer wall except a small section to the left where the private bathroom lay. The floor was covered in white carpet.
Sirius walked to his desk. Already there were papers stacked on it. He sat in his chair and readied himself before diving into the paperwork.
“A lot happens in a week,” he muttered to himself.
He looked though the first stack of papers. Apparently there was a robbery in a U.S. plant where all that was taken was a type of metal. He skimmed though the file quickly but other that it was a rare metal that was taken, it didn’t require much action. He pressed a button on his desk phone.
“Kaiba,” he said.
“Yes,” came the response.
“Put a watch on kirilium sales on the black market, please.”
“Sure thing.”
Kirilium was a special metal made from titanium. It was only used for the new spacecraft’s that could now be used for flying people places and was only used in space programs. It was a strong metal and dealt with heat very well. Most importantly it was light but unfortunately, it had to be created scientifically so there wasn’t a lot of it. The only reason that someone would want to steel kirilium was to sell it to someone else. It depended on whom that someone else was and what they would use it for that bothered Sirius.
“Should I put a notice on private sales too?” Kaiba asked.
“That would be great,” Sirius placed the stack of papers to one side, “You named our dear humanoid after a metal? Have you no taste?”
“Try being an intruder some time,” he muttered, “You’ll get a taste of her metal.”

IOIOIOIOI

Zara had made sure that her best outfit had been laid out the night before but somehow there were wrinkles in it that were not there before. She wore it now but that odd wrinkle seemed to ruin the whole outfit: a sleeveless black shirt, black pants and high heels with minimal but noticeable heel. With a sigh, she packed a gym bag with her weapons inside. She grabbed her keys and left.
Zara walked out of her complex to a surprise. Puppetmaster stood there leaned against a black convertible. He stood there in his coat, hatless, and barefoot. The smile on his face was inviting.
“What’s that?” Zara asked.
Puppetmaster shrugged, “A car.”
“I know it’s a car, but what are you doing with one?” she asked, “I haven’t seen you in anything other than those sandals you wear.”
Puppetmaster nodded in agreement, “That’s true. It’s how I stay fit, you know. You on the other hand, are commuting. How many commuters ride bikes all the way down town?”
Zara’s mouth dropped open, “That’s not—”
Puppetmaster tilted his head slightly, “It’s yours. I figured black would be a nice color. Did I guess wrong?”
She ran up to Puppetmaster and threw her arms around him. He laughed joyfully as she thanked him repeatedly for the unexpected gift. His arms wrapped around her lovingly. Zara was the one who broke the embrace, remembering that she was now a professional and had to maintain appearance. She whipped the tears from her eyes.
“Where did you get the money for this? I doubt thousands of people ran to your store in the past week.”
Puppetmaster opened the passenger door and motioned her to get in, “Let’s just say I ran into some easy money.”
“Easy money?” Zara smiled, “You mean gambling. I didn’t take you for the type.”
He closed the door and walked around the car to the driver’s side, “I only partake when I know I can win.”
“How often do you win?”
“All the time.”
Zara looked skeptical, “Really?”
“I don’t gamble all that much; only when I need the money,” he started the car, “For some strange reason, luck favors me. I feel bad for the gentlemen I win from. That’s why I don’t partake often. I made sure that the fellows I played against to get the money were well to do.”
“You cheat,” Zara laughed.
Puppetmaster looked at her from the corner of his eye, “It isn’t cheating if you don’t get caught.”
Zara scowled a moment as the car left the curb, “Your dolls wouldn’t have anything to do with your ‘luck’ now, would they?”
My innocent little dolls? I’m appalled by what you’re suggesting!” he tried not to but that signature smile spread across his face, “They can hide it rather obvious places, now that you mention it.”
“You’re terrible,” Zara rested her arms on the edge window and laid her head down.
Puppetmaster raised a finger, “Insane. There is a difference.”

IOIOIOIOI

Puppetmaster dropped her off in front of the large building. Zara suddenly felt weak-kneed. She had come so far from where she had started in her aunt’s home. Nervously, she leaned forward and backward on her feet. But then she felt that familiar feeling that she was being watched.
“Chaud, stop sneaking up on me,” she said.
“I wasn’t,” Chaud walked up alongside her.
“Oh, so you just happen to be everywhere I am?”
Chaud nodded, “Coincidences happen.”
“They seem to be happening a lot more often than coincidences should,” Zara eyed him from the corner of her eye.
“Hey, y'all,” Deontay walked up from crossing the street.
“Hey, Deontay,” they said in unison.
Deontay looked up at the tall building and whistled, “Seems a whole lot taller today.”
“Actually, it’s true. During the summer things expand slightly,” Chaud stated in a matter-of-fact manner.
Both Zara and Deontay looked at him. Sometimes Chaud could be a real nuance. Zara raised a hand and hit him in the back of the head.
Chaud flinched and sighed. The three other members in their group walked up just then. Vicky looked as nervous as ever while Hina wore a smile on her face.
“I would have loved to known what that was all about,” she stated.
“He probably said something stupid…or smart…either way the result is the same,” Naru put in his view.
“Thanks, Naru, for the vote of confidence...” Chaud’s voice was thick with sarcasm.
“Anytime,” Naru responded.
It got quiet as they looked up at their future. They stood there on the sidewalk for several minutes. Vicky was brave enough to say something.
“Won’t we be late?” she said quietly.
At that, Zara took the first step up the stairs. She felt the others following her lead. The handles to the door felt cold under her touch. A rush of cold air hissed out as Zara pushed the door open. On the inside, people were rushing to and fro, always having a place to be. In the center of the lobby, a secretary sat answering calls. Zara approached.
“Hello, this is the Tower, hold please; hello, this is the Tower, hold please; hello, this is the Tower, hold please; hello…” the secretary chimed in rhythm. She was surrounded by phones that were ringing off the hook. Piles of folders were stacked up on her circular desk. Computers also were spaced evenly apart. Some looked like they were being used.
“Hello, there!” she said as Zara stood awkwardly in front of her, “One moment. Hello, this is the Tower, hold please. Now how may I help you!?”
“We’re—”
“Oh, you the new recruits aren’t you! One moment!” she picked up a nearby phone and pressed a button. She kept her smile on her face as she waited patiently, “Hello! Sorry to bother you sir, but the recruits are here. Where shall I send them? Uh huh, uh huh, yeah, oh I know where that is! Yeah, yep, mhmm, I see. Totally. Yeah, alright, bye. Wait here,” she told Zara and the others before getting straight to work again.
“Shouldn’t you have some help?” Hina asked the girl.
“Oh, I know! But they all got in trouble when they used the computers to update their social status,” she smiled widely.
“When was that?” Zara asked.
The girl shrugged uncertainly, “Well, I think Sirius fired them about an hour ago. Hello, this is the Tower, hold please.”
“Wow…” Deontay muttered.
“We’re leading a global operation over here. If you’re distracted a lot tends to happen,” the secretary nodded, “One of the girls was even texting. Can you believe that? I mean can’t you wait at home? Hello, this is the Tower, hold please. Hello, this is the Tower, hold please…”
The door opened behind then and a group of girls walked in. They were awestruck by the building’s interior. As a group they walked up to the secretary’s desk. The secretary clicked something on her computer.
“Oh, you’re the replacements! Have you each read and signed the contract?”
The girls nodded.
“Then get to work ladies! The Tower doesn’t stop for anyone! There are hundreds of people who would love to take your place! Chop, chop! Hello, this is the Tower, hold please. You! Take calls 1-36. You! Take 37-49. 50-78 belong to you! Do I have to tell you all everything!? Get it done! We have almost 600 calls to answer! Hello, this is the Tower, hold please.”
Zara quickly looked around. There were people walking toward the exits with a box of their things in their arms and a sad look on their faces but at the very same time, there were people with new suits and shoes walking in with the biggest smiles on their faces. If you were too slow or hindered the well-oiled machine of the Tower in any way, you were replaced. There was no funny business in the Tower.
“Are you the six we’re expecting?” a woman with black hair and purple eyes said. Zara nodded, “Then please follow me.”
They walked through a labyrinth of hallways and doors. Eventually they made their way to a type of medical wing. The woman sat them down in a room and waited with them. A small boy in a science lab coat; no older than 15 years of age, walked into the room with a tray of tiny chips. He set the tray down then pushed up his glasses.
Not too far behind him was the doctor that had seen to Naru. Dr. Jekyll walked in to the room. His clothing was similar to what he had worn almost a week ago. When he came in, Naru seemed to fade into the wall. He walked over to the tray and pulled out a long cylinder device. He inserted one of the chips into the device and walked over to where Zara sat.
A sharp pain shot up her arm as he set one end of the device on her shoulder and pressed a button.
“Ouch!” Zara glared at him, “What was that?”
Jekyll didn’t answer. Instead he pulled out another device. It was the size of a small camera. It beeped approvingly when he hovered it over the painful area.
“ZU3492 activated,” he muttered loud enough for the woman to hear.
She nodded.
After that, he went down the line; loading the chips into the cylinder device, giving the kids a nasty surprise somewhere on their bodies, activating the chips and then moving on to the next. When he was done, he simply walked out with the boy close behind him. By the speed he was going, it was safe to guess that he had somewhere else to be.
The woman stood up and walked in front of them.
