Radioactive: Chapter Eighteen

Radioactive
Chapter Eighteen
~Bring it Together~

Ing ran down an alley with a mutant close on his tail. He used his segmented arms to propel him forward just out of reach of the raging mutant. The mutant snakelike in nature and could keep up with the young android. Ing swung and jumped out of reach with a carefree attitude. He reached the end of the alley and stood there. Ing crouched down and covered his ears with his hands. The mutant crept closer, ready to deliver its final attack. It screamed its victory before its cry was cut short suddenly by a loud gunshot.
The creature fell into a heap on ground just behind Ing. Fang walked out of the shadows in the alley toward Ing with the gun in his hand. He barely looked down at the creature as he walked passed it and holstered his gun. Fang knelt down by Ing and picked him up.
“I’ve always hated how they scream,” Fang stated as he walked out with Ing.
“I just turn down the excessive noise so that it is more bearable,” Ing said with his arms wrapped around Fang.
Fang looked at him, “We humans can’t do that.”
“Oh,” Ing said, “That is unfortunate.”
Fang suddenly crouched down in the shadows of the alley. Ing kept still and quiet as he waited. Above them, five creatures jumped the gap between buildings to the other side. Fang and Ing were unnoticed. Ing was about to say something but Fang placed a hand over Ing’s mouth. Just a few moment later, another mutant jumped over the gap.
“Their organized,” Fang stated, “They even have a sweeper to check for any stragglers.” Fang looked back down at Ing, “Where are the others?”
Ing scanned the area, “The others are scattered in the area. The group of mutants are headed toward Riu and Duke are. We are only a few streets over from their current location.”
“Let’s go,” Fang stood up. He changed into his wolf form, “Hurry up.”
Ing jumped onto Fang’s back. Fang ran off down the alleyway. He took off through the streets following Ing instruction. The group had been broken apart as they tried to restore order to the chaos that was unraveling before them. In the mess of the scene the group of seven lost track of each other and were only just finding each other now. Fang seemed to fly above the ground. His speed was so fast that it didn’t seem like his paws were touching the ground at all. Ing held on to Fang tightly as to not lose his grip and fly off of Fang’s back.
Fang jumped up and climbed up a fire escape. He reached the roof and leaped from one building to the next. Fang slit to a stop to look over the edge of the building. Riu and Duke were down in the street below taking care of any enemies that charged at them.
Duke was brutal with his large broadsword. The ground quaked every time he smashed the blade into the ground. Large crevasses appeared suddenly causing the attacking mutants to fall into them. With a motion from Duke, the ground closed up again leaving only a small scar where the crevasse used to be. Riu spun around, the blades in her hair, cutting at any mutant that got to close. Electricity flowed through her hair as well, shooting out at nearby mutants and electrocuting those who were cut. She stabbed at mutants with the daggers in her hands including the ones she threw.
The six mutants that Fang and Ing had found lay dead around the deadly duo. Lightning from the sky and earth shakes from the ground kept their attackers at bay. A winged mutant flew in over the buildings and dived onto Duke and Riu. Ing jumped over Fang’s back and jumped onto the mutants back. The mutant fell to the ground because of the added weight. It crashed into a row of crowd of mutants clearing the area.
“Hey there, kid! Where’d you come in from?” Riu looked over her shoulder.
Ing stood up and dusted himself off, “Hey! I came from up there with Fang.”
Fang jumped down in his wolf form. He walked over to the others and looked around briefly, looking for any other mutants nearby. Duke looked propped his sword on his shoulder.
“Where do you think the others are?” Duke asked.
“Who cares,” Riu snapped, “We have enough to worry about right now than where the smug-apartment-breaker is.”
“We’re stronger together,” Fang stated. He looked over at Ing, “Who’s closest to our current location?”
Ing closed his eyes and scanned the area, “The closest one is Jekyll.” Ing pointed in the direction.
“The creepy doctor?” Riu made a face, “He creeps me out…”
“As long as you don’t pull a weapon on him, you should be fine,” Fang stalked off into the direction Ing pointed. He looked over his shoulder, “Let’s go!”
“Okie dokie!” Ing ran after Fang.
“Right behind you,” Duke said as he walked after them.
Riu groaned and followed the others, keeping an eye on their flank. Her complaints were just loud enough to get on the other’s nerves.

Jekyll stood over the bodies of about two dozen dead mutants. He sighed out of boredom and tugged on the rim of his hat. Fighting these creatures was getting more and more predictable making fighting them rather boring. They had no strategy and not enough brawn. Over all they just went down to easily. Jekyll fitted on his gloves. He stopped momentary. He looked over his shoulder as if he sensed something. Thinking it was nothing; he turned back around and started walking down one of the alley ways.
He turned around suddenly and threw a surgical scalpel. It struck something unseen to the eye. It screamed and dropped its cloak with a scalpel in its throat. It fell to the ground, jerked, and died. Again, Jekyll sighed.
“That was a better effort,” Jekyll stated, “but still not good enough.”
He heard sounds of fighting near his location and decided to check it out. Jekyll walked toward the noise down the alley. He came out into a small street and ran into Kiri. She ran past him as she fired a handgun at some mutants that chased after her. Jekyll assisted and took down three of the mutants that chased her. Kiri shot down two with accuracy rivaling only Jekyll’s.
Kiri looked over at her help, “Jekyll, it’s good to someone.”
“You’re all alone?” Jekyll asked, “Did Kaiba ditch you?”
“We got separated when one of the mutants attacked,” Kiri explained, “I am closing in on his position now.”
“I guess I have nothing better to do,” Jekyll shrugged, “Saving Kaiba will at least allow me bragging points.”
Kiri rolled her eyes, “Let’s go!”
“Lead the way,” Jekyll smiled.
They ran down the street and turned around a corner. The street was empty but Kiri slowed down. Kiri stopped and looked around curiously.
“That makes no sense,” she said.
“What did he just disappear?” Jekyll asked.
“My scans read that he is moving faster that he can even run which isn’t possible,” Kiri reported.
Jekyll looked up, “Unless he’s had a little help.”
Kiri turned toward Jekyll, “But why would—”
Kaiba crashed into the ground and an angle as if he had been thrown. He came to a rest, sliding on his back. Kiri ran over to him but he shooed her away, getting to his feet on his own. He was more or less in one piece. A loud roar got their attention. An enormous mutant towered at the end of the street. It bellowed before charging down the street.
“It runs in a straight line!” Kaiba told the others, “Jump to one side!”
The three Fixers scattered as the mutant charged by. Jekyll threw three scalpels at the creatures back but the attack was useless. The sharp weapons didn’t have any effect.
Jekyll smiled, “This will be fun!”
“It hasn’t been so far!” Kaiba called back.
“That’s because you didn’t have me!” Jekyll charged forward.
Kiri ran alongside him, “He seems to have a hard exterior. Any projectiles will not have an effect. I suggest keeping it busy while I try to scan for a weakness.”
“Leave it to me,” Jekyll glanced over at her, “I’m sure Kaiba will help to when he’s finished licking his wounds.”
“I heard that!” Kaiba shouted.
Jekyll sighed, “You were meant to.”
Kiri fell back and Jekyll and Kaiba charged at the massive mutant. A long blade jetted out from Kaiba’s wrist as he tried to attack the mutant while its back was still turned. The creature turned suddenly knocking both men to one side. Kaiba flew into a wall while Jekyll that thrown through a glass shop window. Jekyll winced as a shard of glass cut him on his left side. Kaiba got to his feet just as the creature bellowed. Kiri took that time to jump onto its back and balance herself on its shoulders. She pulled a shot gun from a compartment in her back and fired it at the back of the creature’s head.
The mutant cried with more annoyance than pain, reached up with its massive arms, grabbed her and threw her into the ground like a rag doll. Kaiba looked behind him through the broken window. Jekyll was on his feet and pulled the glass shard out of his side. He held the bloodied glass shard in his hand playfully. Jekyll started laughing hysterically.
He stopped just as suddenly as he started. His hat was tossed aside. He looked at the creature with a cold hearted stare, “You made me bleed. I’ll make sure you live to regret that!”
The glass shards on the floor rose with a strange eerie red tint. The creature bellowed in response as it prepared to charge again. Jekyll smiled and raised a single hand. With a cold crazed stare snapped his finger. The glass shards shot forward, striking the mutant at full force. The mutants charge was stopped as it tried to cover its face from the glass. The glass didn’t stop after one pass. They circled the mutant cutting it repeatedly.
Kaiba ran forward. He cut at the creatures legs, weakening it so that it was forced to its knees. Kaiba quickly changed direction and cut in an upward slash along the creature’s chest throwing the creature to one side. The mutant maintained its balance by putting its weight on one arm. Kaiba jumped onto its back and grabbed the creatures head. The blade emerged from his other wrist and he brought down his arm and slit the creature’s throat. The creature bucked and fell to the ground lifeless.
He got off the creatures back and walked over to Kiri, “Kiri are you okay?”
“Checking for any substantial damage,” Kiri paused and didn’t move as she checked her systems, “Severe damage to right side. Unable to access weapon compartment in right arm. Still have motion capabilities. No other substantial damage is noted.” She raised her left arm for assistance.
Kaiba helped her to her feet, “Can you still be of assistance?”
“We androids are ambidextrous,” Kiri explained, “We may have a preference but using out unfavored arm has no effect on our performance.”
“Good,” Kaiba nodded. He turned around, “Jekyll, are you back?”
Jekyll picked up his hat, “I’ve always been here. If you mean mentally, well, I’m here enough to know not to gut you.” He looked at Kaiba, “I’d be careful though. You never know when I might slip up.”
“Looks like we’ve missed the fun!” Riu complained, her hands were on her hips in disappointment.
Fang shook his head, “You were the one dragging your feet complaining about how we had to find the others.”
Ing jumped off of Fang’s back and ran over to Kiri. He looked at her damaged arm and started to do some minor repairs and alterations; just enough to improve its damaged appearance and maybe help her regain the use of her arm.
“What now?” Duke asked.
Kaiba looked down the street. Apparently they had an audience. A few mutants were watching their titan fall. They were hoping to slip back into the sewers without being noticed.
“I say we go hunt this doctor,” Kaiba stated, “I’m getting tired of fighting his minions.”
“About freaking time!” Fang muttered.
“Oh, heck no!” Riu protested, “Do you know how expensive these kicks are!? There is no way you will have me paradin’ around in no sewer!”
“Fine stay here then,” Kaiba shrugged, “I could care less. Come on, everyone. Let’s get this over with.”

Iridescent: Chapter Eighteen

Iridescent
Chapter Eighteen
~Reality – Part 1~
After the Fall

Vicky walked along side Amber as she rode on the back of the wolf. The young girl was sitting up now but looked horrible like she was just starting to recover from something like the flu. Chaud walked ahead, his weapons close at hand. Vicky kept a hand on one of her throwing axes while looking cautiously over her shoulder. Though they had traveled a few days, their constant threat were the hunters pursuing them.
Kew seemed to be carrying a conversation with the wolf from the protection of Vicky’s shoulder. He kewed and mewed while the wolf said nothing in return. After a while he gave up and curled against Vicky’s neck and took a nap.
It was around noon when the sun was somewhat overhead. Chaud didn’t stop for lunch and insisted that his sister be fed first. Vicky helped herself and Amber to some of her jerky. Amber thanked her for the food and ate silently.
“Chaud, there’s plenty left,” Vicky said, “Have some water too, we’ve been walking all day.”
She threw him a wrapped piece. Chaud caught the food and ate it, “Thanks. I have my own water.”
They were on a ledge against the side of a mountain. On their left was a shear drop. Chaud knew the danger of their situation and how vulnerable they were. He wanted them far away and out of the mountains as they could by the end of the day. Then he looked back at his sister and saw how tired and weak she was. The vials were meant to be used for adults. Even he wasn’t supposed to use them yet.
A bullet ricochet off the wall just ahead of him. He looked quickly and ducked down. Vicky looked out across the large gap and looked for where the attack came from.
“Run!” Chaud called before running forward.
Vicky followed as quickly as she’d dare.
“You missed!” Zathura slapped Sanya at the back of the head.
Sanya rubbed her head and looked at Dante, “I really want to know our objective. I’m still under the impression that we’re trying to capture them. Am I wrong?”
Dante shook his head, “Kill the brother and we’ll nab the girl. That boy really hit a nerve and besides, we only need one of them to bring out the rest of the family.”
Sanya nodded, “Got it boss!”
She brought up her sniper rifle and got Chaud in her sights, “What about the other girl he’s with?”
Dante shrugged, “Kill her too, I guess. Don’t know where she came from.”
Sanya shot again but some sixth sense caused Chaud to duck just in time. She swore at her failure and aimed again. Chaud looked in the direction of the shots fired. He raised his gun and fired back. Sanya ducked as the rock she was behind was riddled with bullets.
Chaud motioned for Vicky to go up another pass that cut through the mountain. Vicky ran between two mountains guiding the wolf on where to go. Amber’s eyes were wide with fear. Vicky tried to smile to comfort her. She didn’t look back but she knew Chaud followed close behind her.
Dante motioned to Yin, “You think you can get us over there.”
Yin squared her shoulders and pulled out a vial, “That shouldn’t be a problem.”
She levitated her team in the air and floated them over to the other side. They ran up the narrow pass after their prey. Dante looked back at Sanya.
“I need you to keep them grounded alright,” he smiled.
Sanya saluted, “Gotcha, boss!”
“Everyone else,” Dante grabbed a vial, “Just do your thing!”
Zathura whopped as she jumped into the air.
Chaud and Vicky ran into a type of crater. They stopped suddenly as they saw that were several exits. They stood back to back in a defensive position while they tried to figure things out.
“What way?” Vicky asked.
Chaud looked around, “I’m still figuring that out.”
“Great,” Vicky sighed, “Looks like we need to defend until we figure it out.”
Vicky pulled a vial out of her bag. She looked at it a moment before closing her eyes and pressing the button. Chaud pulled one out of his pocket. Amber saw what they were doing and lunged at her brother’s arm.
“No!” Amber screamed, “Don’t do it! Please!”
Chaud looked at her, “Amber, let go! What are you doing!?”
Amber started crying, “It almost killed you last time! You can’t! I can’t lose you!”
Chaud said nothing for a moment. He looked at his sister and saw the fear in her eyes. He had no memory of what exactly happened when they crash landed in the mountains but it obviously frightened her. Chaud wrapped a hand around his sister.
“I have to if we’re going to get out of here,” Chaud said to her.
A fire ball hurled its way toward them. Vicky saw it and shot out her hand. her eyes were a milky white outlined with black. A ball of wind sped its way toward the ball of fire. The wind barreled through the fire and dispersed the flames.
Chaud looked at the coming threat, “Stay down!”
He pushed his sister to her knees so as not to be a large target for the hunters. Chaud pulled his arm out of her grasp and used the vial. Thunder rumbled through the air and his eyes turned gold. Dante walked out into the crater. The rest of his crew spread out on either side of him.
Dante propped his claymore sword on his shoulder, “Well, here we are again.”
Ai stood by her brother. She watched Chaud and Vicky closely with unfeeling eyes. Ai felt a rise in the electrical energy. She knew Chaud was their biggest threat.
“We all need to focus out attacks on him. Given enough pressure, he’ll break eventually,” Ai said quietly so only Dante could hear her.
He nodded slightly showing that he understood. Ai always had the most analytical mind. She could thing several steps ahead of her opponent given enough information. Their last encounter gave Ai enough to figure Chaud out.
“You aren’t going to get a chance to fly away this time,” Dante smiled.
Chaud looked at him, “We’ll see about that.”
Zathura laughed, “That’s right! Make this interesting! Dead or alive I get paid either way!”
Her shadow climbed up a mountain wall. The shadow stepped out of the wall and stood beside Zathura. Now there were two Zathura’s, the original and the blank copy. Zathura wielded her large battle axe and charged forward her shadow following suit.
Chaud dove to one side as the axe sailed at him horizontally. He rolled to his feet only to see the shadow’s follow up attack. It was about to deliver a vertical attack with the axe she wielded. His wings grew from his back and he jumped back using the strong flap of his wings to carry him back further. The axe broke the rock where he had been.
With Chaud distracted Yin ran in from the other end of the crater. She pointed the tip of her glaive at Chaud’s back and ran forward. Yin smiled when she thought she had him. Suddenly her glaive was struck aside. Vicky stood between her and her target. She took several steps back as Vicky struck her glaive as she used it for defense.
“Get out of my way!” Yin shouted.
Vicky shifted her grip on her throwing axes, “Not a chance.”
Chaud looked over his shoulder before taking to the sky’s. Lightning shot down on where Dante and Ai stood watching. Ai put her hands up and crated a force field around her and her brother. The lighting struck the dome and traveled to the ground before returning to the sky. When Ai dropped the force field Dante blew a string of fire at Chaud. Chaud dodged easily in the air.
A force pulled him to the ground unexpectedly and Chaud fell out of the sky. He brought up his gun in time to block a bullet. Sanya smiled at him and reloaded her sniper rifle. Chaud tried to move but it was like gravity itself was against him. He was pulled to his knees as he struggled against the force.
Sanya raised her weapon and smiled, “Sorry. Gravity’s got you down?”
There was a savage growl as the wolf lunged at Santa. Her concentration broken, Chaud was released from her grasp. She stepped back and the wolf bit down on the gun. The she-wolf pulled the gun away and Sanya pulled a hand gun from her belt.
“No!” Amber lunged at Sanya before she could think.
She had seen her brother’s melee each other several of times. All she had to do was access a clear memory and copy it. Amber closed her eyes for a moment as she ran as she tried to picture what her brothers did. She spun on one leg and kicked the gin out of Sanya’s hand. Surprised, Sanya didn’t know how to react.
Amber kicked her in the stomach but Sanya used her arm to block the attack. Sanya grabbed Amber by the shoulder but all she grabbed was air. Amber ducked down and kicked Sanya’s legs out from under her. Sanya fell to the ground. Amber looked for the hand gun and grabbed it. When she tried to lift the gun off the ground it felt like it weighted several pounds.
Sanya jumped to her feet. She walked over to Amber and grabbed at her hair. Amber screamed and fought against her captor. Her screams instantly drew Chaud’s attention.
“Are we boring you!?” Zathura called.
Chaud turned only slightly before he was struck with the hammer end of Zathura’s battle axe. He was blown back and lay on the ground dazed. Zathura’s shadow counterpart rushed forward and raised its axe, blade end down, in a deadly vertical attack.
“Chaud!” Vicky looked over her shoulder.
Vicky threw her hand out at Yin and blew her back with a gust of wind. She then threw one of her axes at the shadow. Already knowing that would hit her target; she turned around to deal with Yin. Instead of Yin, someone ran at her from her right. Vicky raised her shuriken shield. The ringing of blades striking rang through the air.
Ren looked at her with his uncovered eye and smiled, “You know, you’re pretty cute. Shame I have to fight you though.”
Vicky felt herself turn a shade of red, “That isn’t going to work you know! I’m still going to fight you!”
Ren looked confused, “I was just stating a fact not trying to trick you. Either way—”
Ren pulled away at slashed at her again with one of his symitars. Vicky parried with her shield and upon impact she blew at him. A gust of wind picked up and blew Ren back. He quickly recovered and ran at her. Vicky readied herself for his attack but was caught off guard when instead of attacking her directly he jumped over her. He landed on his feet behind her and attacked at her side. Vicky turned to one side quickly the blade only cutting at her clothes and only a scratch on her skin.
Yin returned and tried to attack while Vicky was occupied. Vicky dodged the attack to her left shoulder and leaned to her right side. She used her powers to use the wind to lift herself into the air. Vicky floated toward Amber and Sanya but felt gravity pull her back to the ground.
“Go!” Vicky called.
Kew jumped off her shoulder and ran toward Sanya. He ran up to Sanya and bit her leg. Sanya cried out in pain releasing Vicky from the gravity bind just in time as both Ren and Yin ran at her. She pulled her ice axe out and blocked an attack from Yin’s glaive. Vicky turned and attacked Ren with her throwing axe.

The Turn: Chapter Eighteen

The Turn
Chapter Eighteen
~Plan B or No Plan B~
Two Years before the Turn

Zara walked on the sidewalk casually with one ear pressed against a cell phone. She wore white Capri pants and a light blue Polo shirt. Her sandals were appropriate for the warm summer weather. A salmon and pink bag hung from her arm as she held the cell phone. She walked past a business building. Large sunglasses covered her eyes as she scanned the building. She pretended to talk to someone on the phone as she looked over the building. There were some guards at the door that dissuaded civilians from entering. She scanned the outside for surveillance cameras. She kept a mental note of their locations, hung up her fake call and then turned around toward the street.

Hand raised, she hailed a cab. A yellow cab sat a few blocks away, off duty. Seeing that there was the prospect of business the cab driver turned on his engine and drove forward. Zara pulled open the door and sat in the back seat. She set her bag down in the seat beside her and fastened her seatbelt.

“Hilton on 45 Avenue,” Zara said as she situated herself.

“Got it,” the driver said as he pulled away from the curb.

They reached a stop light about a block away. In doing what most cab drivers do, the driver engaged in conversation.

“So, what are we up against?” said the white haired cab driver.

Zara pulled out a note bad, “It would be great to get a blue print of the place. The front of building alone has at least ten cameras. There are two guards on duty at all times.”

Chaud looked in the rear view mirror, “Sound’s easy enough. What do you need me to do?”

“I need you to get me in,” Zara stated, “Naru will need a way to hack into the system somehow—”

“But it’s a closed system. No one on the outside can get it,” Chaud complained.

“Your problem, not mine,” Zara looked up, “unless you take back what you said about being able to do anything…”

Chaud sighed, “I’ll figure out something.”

“I thought I’d be nice to station him in the coffee shop across the street,” Zara stated.

“Sure, that makes things so much easier,” Chaud said, his voice thick with sarcasm.

“I don’t want to put all my hens in one basket.”

“I think you mean eggs…don’t put your eggs in one…never mind,” Chaud trailed off as Zara glared at the back of his head. He cleared his throat, “When do I need everything planned?”

“Tomorrow morning,” Zara stated casually, “at the latest.”

Chaud sighed deeply, “That isn’t a lot of time.”

“I don’t want to stay here longer than necessary,” Zara scribbled on the note pad, “This whole New Order thing stinks. I don’t like it. The sooner we get out of here, the better.”

Chaud nodded, “Alright. Leave the details to me. I’ll have a plan put together by tonight.”

“I thought you wanted more time?” Zara teased.

“I came up with a plan in the course of this conversation. Unlike most people who say they can, I can actually multitask. I just like having more that twelve hours to put it all together,” Chaud stated, making the point clear, “We’re here. That will be $36.79.”

Zara dug in her pocket for the money. She found two twenties and tore the paper she had been writing on. After fitting the paper in between the two bills, she placed the money in Chaud’s open palm.

“Keep the change,” Zara stated before leaving.

“Thank you,” Chaud said just before the door slammed.

Zara walked actually up the steps of the Hilton. Chaud found himself another customer. Eyes watched them from across the street at a local café. A figure wore a light white shirt with black pants and white shoes. A wide brimmed had sat on his lap as he sat. His over coat hung from the back of his chair. He took one last sip of his coffee and was about to leave when he noticed a black limo drive by. It seemed out of place in this environment. Then again, it could be on its way to somewhere else. But still, there was this feeling. He left the payment on the table, donned his hat, threw his over coat over his shoulder and walked off down the street. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a phone.

IOIOIOIOI

Zara lounged on the king-sized bed. The contents of the open folder were strewn around her. The others weren’t around. She could care less where they were. That was how Tower Agents worked. They may arrive at their designated city at the same time but the moment the airplane pulled into the terminal, they were complete strangers to each other until the mission. That’s why it was good to have someone like Chaud, an Accomplisher. It was their job to know where everyone was and make everything happen. It was also preferred if the Accomplisher was not the leader.

A team consisted of many different possible jobs. Usually a team member’s job didn’t stray too far from their abilities. There was Zara, she was the leader. She led and planned. Then there was Chaud, the Accomplisher. He took the structure if the leaders plan and made it happen. Hina was back up. Her skills were useful for rescuing any team members and blasting through anything. Naru usually observed. He’d report on the goings on and make sure his team members were out of harm’s way. Vicky was the secret weapon. Yes, she looked meek and lacked confidence but when she was really needed she could pack a punch. Then there was Deontay, the tank. If everything went to hell, he’d barge in and make things better. Other teams might be set up differently but this was how Zara saw things. Chaud saw them the same way.

Zara glanced at the clock briefly. In was nearing nine-thirty. Despite herself she began worrying about Chaud. She looked back at the bed and started placing everything back into the folder.

There was a knock at the door, “Room Service.”

“I didn’t order any,” Zara answered.

There was a sigh, “Look, I just spent a long time cooking this. So, would you like to take it instead?”

Zara sighed and got up out of bed. She walked to the door and looked out of the peephole. After determining that there was no threat, she opened the door. Chaud wheeled the cart in as Zara closed the door.

“Where shall I put it?” Chaud asked still in character. He didn’t know whether it was safe to speak freely or not. It was always customary for the person who has been in a location the longest to start the conversation.

“What is it?” she glared at him.

Chaud opened one of the metal catering lids and exposed the requested blueprints, “Ta-da! Good isn’t it?”

“What do you have planned?” Zara stated, getting straight to business.

“Someone’s grumpy,” Chaud muttered.

Out of the corner of his eye, Chaud saw the hand coming but couldn’t react in time. Zara’s hand slapped him in the back of the head. The look on her face said it all, “You were supposed to be here sooner.”

“I don’t recall giving you a time,” Chaud answered. Another slap.

“You could have called,” Zara defended, “I didn’t know if something happened to you!”

“That isn’t suspicious at all; a random person calling another random person in a hotel in the middle of the night when they don’t even know each other. Yep, no red flags there,” Chaud was leaking with sarcasm.

Zara crossed her arms, “This whole thing just makes me feel edgy.”

“You’ve said,” Chaud nodded. He uncovered another lid, “Here is you’re new identity.”

Zara looked at the ID card and the stack of papers, “Inspector?”

“Congratulations,” Chaud smiled, “You are now a County Health Inspector for a day!”

Zara raised a curious eyebrow, “How did you pull that off?”

“Illegally,” Chaud shrugged it off as nothing, “Here’s a list of everyone else’s identities. Make sure to destroy that after you’ve memorized it. Vicky and I will join you on the inside. Hina is now employed in the business we’re inspecting. Deontay is an electrician and Naru, as you wanted, is a local café patron. You got that? Good. I’ll be leaving now.”

“What am I inspecting?” Zara asked as Chaud started pushing the cart toward the door, “Aren’t you going to tell me more about your plan?”

Chaud looked over his shoulder, “I told you your part. Just do what you need to do and we should be fine.”

“And a backup plan?”

“Hey, you gave me less than a day to think of something,” Chaud narrowed his eyes, “so no, there is no backup plan.

“What if something goes wrong?”

“Every man for himself?”

“Chaud,” Zara rolled her eyes.

“Let’s hope it doesn’t,” Chaud reached for the door knob, “Unless you want to give me an extra day?”

“No,” Zara sighed, “this seems simple enough. I guess it will be fine.”

“I could scrap one up real quick if you want me too,” Chaud said, seeing her concern.

“No, its fine,” Zara said with more certainty, “We should be in and out as fast as we can though.”

“Alright,” Chaud sighed, “I’ll pick you up tomorrow.”

He left the room. As the door closed behind him he noticed a figure just a down the hallway.  He stood in front of the elevator. Chaud saw the man’s eyes from under his wide brimmed hat, but only a glimpse. The elevator door opened. The man dipped his head slightly at Chaud in greeting and entered the elevator.

Chaud gripped the carts handles, “Why would…?” he started but didn’t finish his thoughts.

He pushed the cart down the hallway with the feeling that he should start thinking up a plan B.
