Happy
Birthday Celebration Everyone!
Videogames: who
doesn’t love em? Am I right or am I right? They are amazing. They are like
books in that they take you to another place without all the reading. Don’t get
me wrong, books are great but sometimes you just don’t feel like reading but
want the same amount of action. This happens to me particularly on my birthday.
Being the introvert
that I am, I celebrate my birthday day alone. There isn’t anything wrong with
that. This usually follows an entire week of people calling and asking to hang
out, social interactions, and repeating the phrase ‘thank you’ every time
someone says ‘happy birthday’. That and making a billion cupcakes. Since it’s my birthday shouldn’t the people at
work be the ones to make me
cupcakes? Whatever, I don’t mind. I like baking anyway. Anyway, I ramble.
So the thirty-first
of May rolls in and I snuggle up on my bedroom floor in front of my small TV. I
pop in the latest Zombie game that came out into my console and waited as the
device spout dust and came to life. What a better way to spend a private
holiday than to slaughter zombies with baseball bats and other blunt
objects…did I say I was an introvert?
I was on my way to
retrieve something in game when I thought I heard something strange. I glanced
at my window and shrugged. It was probably a noise the game was making anyway.
As I walked through the virtual universe, another noise caught my attention. I
paused the game and listened but there was nothing. I shrugged my shoulders and
unpaused the game.
Shortly after I
resumed playing my bedroom door was knocked down. Startled, I dropped my
controller and looked at the door. Whatever had knocked down my door lunged at
me and pinned me to the floor. The creature gave off an inhuman growl as I
tried to push it off of me. I tried to keep the creature away from me as it
tried to bite at me.
“Help!” I shouted as
fought with the creature, “Someone help me!”
My window shattered
as someone swooped in to save the day. The sound of a gunshot rang through my
ear. The creature slumped over on top me. My savior kicked the creature’s body
off of mine and offered me a hand to help me to my feet.
I breathed heavily
and I stood up, “That was close! What the heck was that thing!?”
“You don’t know a
zombie when you see one?” my rescuer muttered.
I looked up at him
and stopped suddenly. Something about him seemed suspiciously familiar. His
gold eyes looked at me with little interest. His hair was mostly white with a
few black strands hidden in the mix. He wore a black sleeveless shirt and black
jeans. A silver gun was in his hand that he had used to shoot the zombie. I
glanced at my laptop sitting on a desk nearby and wondered.
There was another
inhuman growl just out in the hallway. I backed up against the wall beside my
window.
“Shadow,” my rescuer
said simply.
“I know, I know,” a
voice laughed.
I felt a hand on my
shoulder and the wall behind me gave way. For a moment everything around me was
in black and white. Any object was colored white whether it was alive or not.
Everything else was black. The next second I was outside on my metal balcony
looking into my room through the window.
“You really can be
too demanding you know that Fang?” Shadow smiled, “We should discuss that on
out next private meeting.”
Fang fired several
shots at the coming zombies. I looked around and it appeared like everything
had hit the fan. Buildings were on fire and the undead walked through the
streets. A small airplane fell from the sky and struck a building a few streets
down and burst into flames. Shadow pulled a latch and kicked down the
extendable ladder. He stepped back and motioned to the ladder.
“After you,” he said
with a smile.
I climbed over the
metal fence and down the ladder. When I reached the street a black car came
barreling towards me. Frozen with fear, I stared at the headlight. Fortunately
for me, the car came to a screeching halt. My brain still struggled to grasp
what was going on.
“What the heck is
wrong with you!?” a girl jumped out of the passenger side door. She had dark
skin and her black hair was pulled back into a bun. The girl walked around the
car toward me with a shot gun in her hand, “Can’t you see we’re trying to get
out of here!?”
There was a loud
thump as Fang landed on top of the black car from the balcony. The girl turned
and aimed her gun at him.
“Now, now, Fang that
isn’t very nice,” Shadow draped and arm over my shoulder and pushed me toward
the car, “We should ask these nice people to give us a hand.”
“That would take too
long,” Fang dropped down to the ground and opened the front passenger side
door.
“Hey!” the girl
yelled, “What are you doing?”
Shadow pushed me
around the other side to the back seat. He opened the door for me and let me go
in first. I sat in the center while he sat on my left. I looked at who was
driving. He looked at me through the rear view mirror as he pushed a few
strands of white hair out of his eyes. His eyes turned to the rear passenger
side as the girl opened the door and got in. She glared at me as I smiled
awkwardly at her.
“So I take it we’re
taking these three?” the driver asked.
“What do you think,
Chaud!” she rolled her eyes, “I figured we could use some bait in case we get
into trouble. We could start with this one.” She pointed at me.
Fang reloaded his
gun, “I’d like to see you try. I’ll put three bullets in your friend here
before you could open the door.”
“Go right ahead,” the
girl propped the against the window, “I’d rather be driving anyway.”
Chaud looked over his
shoulder at her, “Well, thanks Zara. At least now I know where we stand.”
Zara shrugged
dismissively.
I jumped when
something pounded on the passenger window. Shadow simply looked over his
shoulder and smiled.
“I think it’s safe to
say we should get going,” Shadow said.
Chaud stepped on the
gas and started driving. He drove through the narrow streets with a careless accuracy.
His driving looked random and even hazardous but he seemed to know where he was
going and how much of a tail spin he should put on those sharp turns.
Not used to such
driving, even though I’ve always wanted to experience it, I did felt the need
to grab on to something. I held on to my seat hoping that no one noticed.
Everyone else seemed used to the unexpected turns and jumps. On more than one
occasion, Chaud mowed down a few zombies.
Eventually we came to
the lake. It stretched out ahead of us as we drove toward it. I expected him to
stop but he only accelerated. I looked at Zara and Shadow. Zara ignored me and
stared a head but Shadow smiled back at me as if we were only on our way to the
park.
I felt the impact
against the railing as we drove off the edge. My heart and stomach both jumped
into my throat as I felt the car descend into the water. Water broke through
the windshield and the car quickly filled with water. I took a deep breath as
the car descended.
In the water I looked
around for assistance but there was no one around me. I assumed they already go
out but wondered why they would leave me. More importantly I had to figure out
how to get out. The car was still descending so I swam to the front windshield.
I immediately regret it. With all the water pouring in it felt like I was using
more energy than I should have been. But somehow I manage and got out. I swam
to the surface as fast as I could.
When I broke the
surface I gasped for air. I looked around and noticed that there was more water
in our lake than I thought possible. I turned around and saw an island, an
island that defiantly no in the lake by my house. With nowhere else to go I
started swimming toward land. A large wave rose behind me and pushed me towards
the island.
After what seemed
like forever, I washed up on shore. I flopped down on the sand and looked up at
the sky. I was able to get a few seconds rest before I heard a large explosion.
Quickly, I jumped to my feet and turned to look at the island.
“Hey you!” a man
called. He had a gun in his hand and an unhappy look on his face. Something
about him said ‘run’ to me, so I did.
I turned toward the
forest and ran. The man wasn’t happy about that. He called several other angry
looking men and they all ran after me. I ran as fast as I could, zigzagging my
way through the forest, keeping as many trees and distance between me and those
guys. I looked over my shoulder for one moment and lost my footing. I tumbled
down a hill and over a small cliff.
I fell on my back and
groaned in pain. Before my vision even cleared someone appeared over my. She
had black hair, a white tank top and brown cargo pants. A bow and arrow hung
over her shoulder. Her hand was on my throat as her other hand held an ice axe.
She looked at me with anger, like she would be all too happy to end me right
there.
“Vicky!” a male voice
called behind her.
“Are you one of
them!?” Vicky asked, “Answer me!”
“One of who!” I
cried, “I don’t know who you’re talking about.”
Vicky pulled me to my
feet by just gripping ahold of my neck. A boy walked up and looked me over. He
had curly hair and blond highlights. His skin was dark and he looked like he
could break me like a tooth pick if he really wanted to.
“What do you think,
Deontay?” a girl asked as she cowered by her bodyguard.
She was much better
dressed than Vicky or Deontay. Her summer dress was torn and dirtied. The
tennis shoes on her feet didn’t look like she owned them originally as they
were a few sizes too large. Her body guard had blue hair and looked at me
silently. His eyes didn’t stray.
“It’s alright,
Arisa,” Deontay let go of me; “Calm down there Vicky. This person here doesn’t
have a killer in em.”
I looked around.
Apparently I fell into their camp. There was a small fire place inside a small
cave and some provisions lying around. There were several gun shots that caught
everyone’s attention. Lara Crof—I mean—Vicky looked around.
“We need to get
going!” Vicky motioned them to follow her.
“Lumin,” Arisa drew
closer to her bodyguard, unsure of what to do next.
Lumin held her close
and they followed after her. Deontay grabbed my shoulder and motioned for me to
follow. I ran after Vicky with Deontay close on my heels.
“Where are we going?”
I asked to no one in particular.
Deontay was the one
who answered, “We’re probably headed to the ancient ruins that Vicky discovered
a few days ago. She said it had good defensive capabilities. We were on our way
there when we camped for the night on that bluff. Then you dropped in before we
could pack up and go.”
I tried to keep up with the others as I ran.
It was defiantly obvious that I wasn’t at all near as fit as the others.
Eventually, to my relief, we came to our destination. The ruins were amazing. I
had always wanted to see something like them but never had a big enough bank
account. Vines grew on all over the ruins surface. It looked like a type of
temple, small in size but still very important looking. The group went inside.
“We need to set up a
perimeter!” Vicky called.
“You think they
followed us?” Deontay asked.
Vicky looked over her
shoulder, “Are all the gunshots outside a good enough indication?”
Deontay shrugged, “I
guess.
Vicky threw Deontay a
shotgun. Deontay loaded the gun and headed near the front door. Lumin pulled a
hand gun from his belt. Deontay motioned for me to stand beside Arisa. I looked
around the room. There was one door, the one where they entered. The entrance
was at the top of several steps giving them the advantage. There was an
intricate pattern on the floor inside the temple.
“Here they come!”
Vicky informed the others.
Stay here and keep down.
Arisa nodded and
crouched down in to a corner. I had to think a minute on how I was able to read
Lumin’s expression as if he had actually spoke. But I didn’t have long before
the gun fire started. I ducked down as Vicky and Deontay returned fire.
“Get down!” Vicky
called.
A rocket struck
somewhere on the temple and the old building shook. I jumped when a piece of
the roof fell in close proximity to my location. Arisa screamed and covered her
head with her hands. Several crazy men that had chased me earlier ran into the
temple. Lumin shot at them with as the streamed in. Deontay made quick work
with the shot gun in his hand. Vicky too was a vicious fighter. She knew how to
use a bow and arrow adequately well. When the enemies drew close she used the
ice axe like no one’s business.
Explosions rocked the
building and I look overhead to make sure I wouldn’t become a flattened
pancake. An intense screaming as one of the guys charged at where Arisa and I
sat. I froze hoping that someone would deal with the situation. Arisa picked up
a rock and threw it. The rock hit the man in the face but it wasn’t hard enough
to knock him out, only to faze him. Lumin, who was occupied at the moment,
turned and shot the man. Arisa whimpered as the man fell lifeless on the
ground.
There was a large
explosion to my right. The wall was blown open. I peered through the dust and
smoke. My ears rang due to the explosion. Crazy men ran through the opening.
Deontay turned and shot a large hole in the coming force behind them. I looked
to Arisa and figured that it wasn’t a good idea to hang around in that area
anymore.
I grabbed Arisa by
the wrist and ran along the wall away from the gaping hole in the temple.
Together we found another hiding spot behind a large fallen rock. I looked over
the edge occasionally to see what was going on. Vicky and the others were
demolishing the opposing force but it seemed like the bad guys kept coming. We
were seriously outnumbered and I felt an overwhelming feeling to help.
“Wait here!” I said
to Arisa.
She tried to stop me
but I already started running into the center of the fray. I got to the center
of the room and suddenly found myself trapped in a metal box. There were eight
round windows and I could see the scene playing out around me. I banged on the
metal and tried frantically to get out.
“LAUNCHING IN 5…4….3…2…”
a robot voice said.
“Launching where?” I
asked.
“1…IGNITION!”
The metal box shot
into the air like a rocket. It blasted through the temple roof. Looking down I
realized the bottom was see-through and saw the ground getting further and
further away. I’m not going to lie, I freaked. I screamed as I ascended higher
and higher. The rocket passed through the clouds. My assent started to slow and
I started falling toward earth again only what I saw on the way down wasn’t
earth.
The rocket crashed
landed on a floating city. I tumbled out of the rocket as it crashed and rolled
a few feet away. I lay on my back and very nearly cried because I was so scared
for my life.
“What do we have
here?” a female voice asked.
“Seems like we have a
visitor,” another male voice said.
I groaned. I was
getting a little tired of my adventure. Slowly I got to my feet. I looked
behind me briefly and was shocked to find my little rocket severally damaged
and on fire.
The female voice
scoffed, “I guess that was a one way ticket.”
The male voice
agreed, “It would appear so.”
I turned around and
saw two people standing side by side. One was a girl and the other a boy. They
looked like twins as they stared back at me with a very blank expression. The
boy carried a chalk board with the words left and right written on it. Under
the left category there were several tally marks. The girl carried a tray with
two cups face down.
“Who are you?” I
asked.
“He’s Naru,” she
said.
“She’s Hina,” he
said.
“Can you find the
coin?” Hina asked and extended the tray.
“I doubt you’ll guess
the right one,” Naru said.
A large explosion
racked the floating city. I looked past the twins. A large stone structure in
the shape of an angel appeared to be falling from the sky.
I pointed, “What the
heck is going on?”
Hina ignored my
comment, “Left—”
“Or right?” Naru
finished.
I glanced down at the
chalkboard. I felt lucky, “Right.”
Hina lifted the right
cup but there was no coin underneath, “I really thought it would be there.”
“I told you I’m
always right,” Naru stated.
“Should we be doing
something about that structure?” I asked.
“Why?” the twins said
in unison.
I struggled to spit
out my words, “Because it’s falling to pieces!”
Slowly each sibling
turned to each other and then at the falling structure.
“Well, that looks a
bit odd,” Hina sighed, “Has it always looked like that?”
“I can’t say really,”
Naru sighed as well, “It gets difficult when you aren’t fully sure what ‘tence’
you’re in.”
Hina looked at Naru,
“We’re in the presentence of course.”
Naru looked at Hina,
“Are we really? Which presentence are you referring to?”
“The present of
course,” Hina rolled her eyes.
“Of course,” Naru
seemed to understand but I didn’t.
“How do I get out of
here?” I asked the twins.
Both of them pointed
to the falling structure. They looked at me with a blank stare. Of course, I
had to make my way to the collapsing statue! I ran through the two strange
siblings and ran down the street to the statue. I felt like I was on some kind
of timer.
“Should we have
mentioned the False Prophet?” Naru asked.
Hina looked at Naru,
“I thought we did. Didn’t we?”
Naru shrugged and
looked at his sister, “Again, hard to tell.”
“I really though
right would win though,” Hina sighed.
I turned around a
moment and they were gone. The twins had vanished. The sound of gunfire drew my
attention back to the direction I was running towards. I continued running and
saw a man with short red hair gunning down a battalion of old fashion cops that
were running toward him. I though it a good idea to not get to close and stood
behind the only cover I could find…a lamp post.
A small girl ran over
and hid behind a bench. She picked up a gun that had been conveniently left
there.
“Alister, I have
ammo!” the girl cried, “Catch!”
She threw the gun at
man with red hair. He caught it and used the gun to fire a relentless stream of
bullets at the coming police men.
“I’ll look for some
more!” the girl cried.
“Take your time,
Amber!” Alister called back.
Amber walked
cautiously from one cover to the next. I hid in the spot that she was at first.
I figured it would be a slightly better hiding spot. She looked all around for
weapons and ammo for Alister to use. I kept myself hidden until the fire fight
was over.
“Looks like that’s
the last of ‘em,” Alister propped a gun on his shoulder.
I peeked over the
bench slowly. This character seemed more of the ‘shoot first, ask later’ types.
Not a surprise, he saw me. He aimed his weapon at me and I shot my arm into the
air.
“Don’t shoot! Please don’t
shoot!” I cried.
“And who the heck
might you be!?” Alister asked.
“I got shot up here
in a rocket and I’m just looking for a way back down!” I explained as best I could.
I thought it best to leave out the zombies and ancient temples bit.
“Yeah? Well, get in
line kid,” Alister narrowed his eyes.
“I think we should
help,” Amber smiled.
“You think we should,
what?” Alister looked down at her.
Amber continued
smiling, “I mean, we’re trying to get out of the city to, right? What harm
would it do to give our friend a hand?”
“It would do a lot of
harm,” Alister thought a moment, “Wait a minute, friend? We don’t even know the
kid!”
“Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeas~~~”
Amber looked at Alister with the biggest puppy eyes she could muster.
“No! A thousand times
no!—Hey, hey don’t do that! Stop it! Quit it with the eyes! I said no…maybe. Maybe.
Let me think about it,” Alister’s will was weakening.
The girl was good. I had
never seen anyone pull off the puppy eyes the way she did. It was like an art
form that she mastered and Alister was melting under such cuteness. Alister couldn’t
even look at her directly. He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye as he
tried to maintain his steal appearance.
“Fine,” Alister
muttered, “But if you don’t take care of your friend its back to the streets, understand?
I have enough trouble keeping you out of harm’s way…”
“Yay!” Amber jumped
up and down with glee.
She got herself a new
pet! Wait………I’M NOT A PET!
The sound of more
police men echoed in the conveniently empty streets. They were still a distance
off but they would descend on the area real quick. Alister looked around and
motioned to Amber and I.
“Come on you two! We’ve
got to move!” Alister ran ahead.
He led us through the
streets until we made it to a dead end. A rail curved overhead and rounded the
corner and was lost from sight.
“You ready?” He
looked back at me and Amber.
I was about to say
something when Amber beat me to it.
“Wait!” Amber wailed,
“I found some money!”
Alister just looked
at her, “Of all the times, you though now was a great time to tell me that?”
Amber shrugged, “It
was the only time you weren’t running. Oh, and there’s a lock pick over there.”
Alister looked, “Where?”
“There,” Amber
pointed.
“Oh, there it is,”
Alister picked up the lock pick and put it in his pocket.
“Do you want the
money now?” Amber asked.
Alister shrugged, “Yeah,
why not.”
“Here you go!” Amber
flipped the coin. It stun in a perfect arc and Alister caught it easily and
also stored it in his pocket.
“Ready to go?” Alister
asked.
“Yep!” Amber chimed.
“Actually—” I said.
“Great! Let’s go!”
Alister turned and jumped up toward the rail.
A device that was on
his wrist latched on to the rail and he sailed off on the rail. Amber did the
same. She jumped up and started to zoom away. In a desperate attempt to not be
left behind I grabbed onto her leg. She screamed in surprised as we sailed into
open air. I screamed when I looked down and realized that what I did was probably
the most stupid thing I could have done.
“Don’t you have your
own rail shooter?!” Amber screamed down at me.
“What the heck is a
rail shooter!?” I asked.
I felt my grip
slipping as Amber’s sock slipped down her leg. And for this next part, I don’t blame
her. If I was a little girl dangling from a rail going 20-30 miles per hour on
a roller-coaster like rail system with someone dangling from your leg I would
have done the same thing. She kicked my hand. I don’t know, maybe my hands were
sweaty and it felt weird but either way she kicked my hand. I lost my grip and I
fell.
I fell through the
clouds into a darker atmosphere. The sky was darker as if a storm were coming
in as I fell and continued to fall spiraling out of control to the earth below.
All of a sudden, my descent speed decreased significantly until I was almost
gloating down to the ground like a feather. There are no words to describe how
happy I was to be alive…again.
My knees buckled underneath
me and I kissed the ground. I instantly regretted it though. Never kiss the
ground. There is no way of knowing what you’re putting your mouth through. Anyway,
as I spit and blew a raspberry I looked around my new surroundings. It was dark
but I could tell that I was in a city…somewhere…in the US…maybe.
Something stirred in
the darkness that brought me to my feet. A girl waked out wearing a blue and
gold stripped shirt. She pushed her glasses up her nose and looked surprisingly
determined for a girl her stature.
“Come on out Raven!”
she shouted, “I’ll teach you to mess with my manga collection!”
I turned and on the
other side was another girl wearing a dark cloak. She pulled the hood back and
glared at the other girl.
“I only borrowed one,
Penelope!” Raven said, “Besides, I was going to return it!”
“Get ready for a
world of pain!” Penelope challenged.
“You are no match for
my skills,” Raven replied.
Then it dawned on me.
These girls were going to fight…and I was in the center of it. Raven dashed
forward with blinding speed knocking be backwards onto the ground. In the blink
of an eye, she kicked Penelope in the stomach and sent her flying backwards. Penelope
cried in pain when she struck a wall. She quickly got to her feet.
“Ha!” Penelope
shouted.
Penelope disappeared and
reappeared in front of Raven. She extended her arm and touched Raven. She then disappeared
again and struck Raven from behind. Penelope disappeared again and again in
rapid succession. The final impact sent Raved sprawled on the ground. She got
up again and lunged at Penelope.
Me? I did my best to
stay out of their way. I could see a way out of my predicament so I ran to and
fro trying to get in the way of another ultimate attack. Raven somehow picked
up a dumpster with no trouble at all and threw it at Penelope. I jumped out of
the way when Penelope was thrown into a wall. I was on the ground in the center
while Penelope and Raven were on opposite ends of me.
“You are going down!”
Penelope roared.
Raven smiled, “We’ll
see about that!”
The ran at each other
with me in the center. I scrambled to my feet to get away. When they met in the
middle I was only a few feet away. Penelope was throwing a punch and Raven was
kicking. Glowing energy seemed to build up at the impact point. When fist and
foot struck the energy was unleashed. A powerful surge of energy blew me off my
feet. I soared into the air and landed on top of a building.
I rolled to a painful
stop. When I thought it was finally over, the girls appeared again out of
nowhere.
“Rrah!” Raven
growled.
She pulled a sword
litteraly out of nowhere and lunged forward. The tip touched Penelope and then
she started striking with an unrelenting sword attack. Penelope recovered,
grabbed a barrel and chucked it at Raven like it was nothing. Raven blew back, dazed.
When Raven was back to her feet, they charged at each other again.
“Wait!” I yelled, “Please
stop!”
Instead of attacking each
other they attacked me. I tell you, getting kicked in the stomach my two people
is bad. They kicked me father than a football. I pin-balled between two
buildings and fell on some track. Just mu luck the train was coming and hit me
head on. For some reason the tracks were damaged and the train fell into a hole
with me hanging on for dear life.
I must have passed
out because the next thing I knew, I was laying on the floor of my room staring
up at the ceiling.
“And that’s my story
of how I realized I play to many videogames,” I stated as I looked around the
circle of my Videogamer’s Anonymous meeting.
I got blank stares
from everyone. Both men and women were at the meeting and it was my first day
there. It was a sunny day, a good day to deal with issues. The leader of the
group took off his glasses and sighed. He pressed a finger to his lips before
saying anything.
“Have you considered counseling?”
he said, “Because I don’t think we can help you here.”
My shoulders fell, “Really?”
“Really,” he was dead
serious.
I sighed and got up
from my seat and walked out of the room. I stood there a while and vaguely
listened to the others tell their traumatic video gaming events.
“Do I really need counseling?”
I asked myself, “Am I that bad?”
“I think your fine,”
Puppetmaster said as he miraculously appeared beside me.
“You sure?” I asked.
Puppetmaster shrugged,
“You seem fine to me.”
“Great!” I said, “Let’s
go play some Far Cry 3: Blood Dragons!”
Puppetmaster smiled, “Sound
good to me.”
Sorry
if it was too long. The games mentioned were Dead Island: Riptide, Tomb Raider,
Bioshock Infinite, Injustice: Gods Among Us and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragons so I don’t
get sued! :D
